Any crime novels as good as Clockers by Richard Price?

I lovoe that book; it's one of my favorites. But I am afraid all other crime novels I have started have fallen flat. Even Price's other works aren't nearly as good. Any suggestions?

  1. Have you read James Patterson? There is a series that starts with 1st to Die and goes up to the 6th Target. Very good. Also his book called the Beach House is great.
  2. Alot of people suggest: american tabloid by James Ellroy (some say it's the best crime novel ever written; I wouldn't know though). gangster by lorenzo carcaterra (I started reading this awhile ago, I got busy and never finished, it was good though). the lovely bones by alice seabold (it's a book about a crime, I really enjoyed it). hide and seek by james patterson (another book I started reading, but also never had the time to finish; was getting good though).
  3. The Wire: Truth Be Told by Rafael Alvarez The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner-City neighbourhood by David Simon ( I love this book it was better than the series.)
  4. Everything You Know is Wrong - John Stossel In at the Death - Harry Turtledove Eye of the Storm - Jack Higgins Maltese Falcon - Dashell Hammett Also try: James Patterson, Lee Child, Tom Clancy, Robert Ludlum, Larry Bond, Lincoln Preston
  5. No I'm afraid there aren't any quite as good as Clockers. Of course I'm like you and I think it is one of the worlds greatest books. It's in my top 5 and I read ALOT. I think you really need to try to avoid comparison and also maybe don't limit yourself to crime fiction. You might want to check out Harry Crews and Larry Brown. Also Tim O'Brien and Thomas McGuane. You also might want to read A Bonfire of the Vanities by Tom Wolfe. John Sandford writes a great series of detective fiction which all have the word prey in the title. They aren't Clockers but they're pretty good reading. The same goes for the authors Craig Holden, Dennis Lehane, Chuck Hogan and Chuck Logan. Congratulations on your good taste. I hope you find something here.
