Crime Novels Knowledge Base
Which stereotypes and cliches are you sick of in crime novels? Are there character traits that you never want to read about again? Crimes you're sick of? Tell me which things happen too often, why some characters seem to be the same, etc. I'm writing a crime novel and want to know what's boring, what's overdone, and what's not.
Is it in bad taste to read crime novels? So, I consider myself an avid reader...I enjoy letting my mind wrap its way around beatuiful prose, satire, insight, and philosophy. I hardly ever read non-fiction unless it's about a certain public figure I particularaly admire. Anyway, I also enjoy reading quick, easy reads...particularly certain crime novels. I used to read James Patterson when I was 14 or 15...but I've realized that his books, while entertaining, are pretty dumb page-turners at best. The prose is elementary school level, and the Alex Cross novels often remind me of a pumped-up, more violent version of the Goosebumps series. Anyway, I've started reading the Harry Bosch series by Michael Connelly...and I'm enjoying it a lot. Is it poor taste to mix in escapist fare like this with my more "intellectual" readings? I only ask because certain people I know give me dirty looks when I tell them I've become attached to certain crime novels...they look at these books as cheapening their sense of intellectual worth.
Does anyone know of any good crime/thriller novels with a supernatural twist? I'm looking for a some crime/thriller novels with a supernatural twist. Can you reccomend any crime novels with comedy/ romance? I really like the work of Janet Evonavich or Robert. B Parker, and wondered if anyone could recomend any similar books? Crime/ thriller, not too gory but with some laughs and romance. Ive actually read Artimos Foul books, and Meg Cabot's series...i love her! I have read everything that Robert B Parker has out, but thanks for the other suggestions...i'll try them!
Anyone suggest any good crime novels? I've just finished reading the 'Red Riding' series by David Peace and I'm looking for something in the same vein. Dark and involving police corruption preferably. I've read Red Dragon and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Are there any gay films and novels with a crime genre theme? Looking at Crime Genre films in Media has had me wondering if there is any gay (or lesbian, bisexual) central characters/plots in either film/TV or novels that fit with the Crime, Thriller, or Mystery Genres? I know of Third Man Out and Shock To The System but that's it.
what are some cheesy crime-fiction novels? I'm looking for some very cheesy, stereotypical crime novels. The kind in which the detective (usually) narrates and refers to women (who are always throwing themselves at his feet) as "birds" and drinks too much. Like the ones seen in the film "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang". Does anyone know of any? Eric K: I didn't mean Kiss Kiss Bang Bang the movie itself. I meant the detective novels Harmony reads in the movie.
why am i fascinated by gory forensic details, as in crime novels and csi? i used to love horror stories, but now am more interested in scientific thrillers, the more gruesome the better. i am half malay - perhaps that is relevant? i'm not bloodthirsty in other ways, i don't like to cut things up, but i do love to collect bones and dried up dead animals. i am a 40 yr old woman whose other interests are art and gardening!
Any Good Fashion Crime Novels? Hi guys, My little sister is like most average teens who don't like to read unless it is about something cool and she is actually willing to give it a try. She's trying to look for a book that is not boring and has to do with fashion, grudge, fast pace, love romance, crime scenes novels all in one? She is also into romance comedies novels or anything worth reading where you can't put it down. We are so different so my choice of books are not what she intends on reading. Thank you in advance for all your help.

True Crime novels...? What are some good true crime novels out there? I'm currently reading The Ice Man(great book) and am almost done. Looking for another good book to read.
Ann Rule True crime novels.? I love true crime novels as well as horror novels. I see that Ann Rule is a top rated true crime writer so I am looking to purchase one of her books. Can anyone recommend a good true crime book written by Ann Rule? New or old doesn't matter. I would like it to include more than just one case if possible. But if the book is really good, one case is fine. Thanks!
Suggestions for thematic CRIME NOVELS, anyone? Hey all, I'm really into crime stories now, they're so awesome. Just looking for suggestions for "thematic" crime novels, since these are the ones I really enjoy. For example, BROTHER GRIMM by Craig Russell is about a killer who bases his kills on fairy tales, eg posing his vics into Jack and Jill, Little red riding hood and so on. I really liked this novel, and so did my younger sister. I'm currently reading THE ROSARY GIRLS by Richard Montanari. So do you know any 'thematic' crime novels that you think I might enjoy, based on the examples above? Thanks in advanced, Scorepyon
Does anyone know of any good crime Graphic Novels? I've been down on my luck recently and want to get my mind on something else so I won't have to think about it anymore. I have a fascination with graphic crime-noir novels! I recently read "Fell Vol.1" by Warren Ellis. I'm in the process of reading "Scene of the Crime: A Little Piece of Goodnight" by Brubaker and it's pretty awesome. Now, I want to read "Torso" by Brian Michael Bendis. Does anyone know of anymore good crime graphic novels? Or maybe crime novels in general.

I'm want the medical examiner to find out. He knows she has, so how can she find out that he is? What can she do that gives her the answer to who the killer is!

Can you recommend a good crime novel please? Ideally a series of books but a good one-off is fine too. Read all the Ian Rankin Rebus novels; the Jeffery Deaver Lincoln Rhyme novels; Harlan Coben's Myron Bolitar series; Agatha Christie and Doyle's Sherlock Holmes also. Thanks everyone - these are looking great and so many ideas to explore. You've whetted my appetite and Google is gonna be busy now I have some meaningful search words at my disposal.
Where can I donate foreign-language novels in the San Francisco Bay Area? I'm a writer with about a dozen boxes of my first and second books in French, Spanish, German, Dutch, Swedish and Polish. They're crime novels and written/translated at the level that they'd require fluent readers, not beginners in a new language. There are too many to just dump on my local library, and I hate to just throw them all in a recycling bin. Ideas?
Crime Novel Ideas / What would be a good message / tagline? I'm thinking there would be a good crime novel or crime thriller by film one of these days. Here are some different plots / summaries. A police detective discovers that the man wanted for the assault of a young woman may be a killer. Mysteries begin to unravel when a police detective discovers that the man wanted for attacking a female coed may be more than what he seems. A police detective discovers that a young woman's attack may be linked to a number of unsolved cases. A young college coed is attacked. She survives and identifies her attacker. The attacker is arrested and maintains his innocence. He pleads not guilty and fails to show up at the hearing, believing the woman is 100% sure he attacked her and that the jurors find him guilty and would have him sentenced to life in prison. He becomes a wanted man. A police detective becomes involved with the young woman and the case and the intention on catching him. Investigating the case, he searches the man's home and uncovers hidden evidence dating back from the years of a number of unsolved cases. He discovers that the man may be behind several cases includes an unsolved serial killing case, a woman's unsolved murder, the unsolved disappearance of the girl's older brother, a case in which a man was cleared as a suspect in a man's stabbing death, and a case where he was sentenced to only 6 months in prison for rape. The detective also discovers records of his violent past and childhood years. As the killer taunts the detective and kills a few people, even those close to him, the detective learns that it would take more than the consequences it could lead to into hunting the man down and bringing him in dead or alive. It's about a cop who tries to catch a wanted suspect and deranged but presumable serial killer. Do you know what the message would be to this story? Like trying to catch or find a man wanted for crimes he committed? I'm just making this up based on the case in which a Clark Rockeffeler recently abducted his daughter and got arrested for abduction and which police find shocking detail and that he may have been behind some unsolved cases.
I am writing a crime novel and searching for the perfect crime? So far I have committed criminal damage by throwing my 1957 coronation mug onto the shag pile. Punching myself in the face under the duvet and trespassing in my neighbours potting shed (that was a close one I didn't realise he was having an affair with my wife). As yet I remain undetected. Next I intend to purchase a stamp under an assumed name. Do you have any advice?
